The Kedarkantha Trek in Uttarakhand is one of the most loved winter treks in India. Known for its snow-covered trails, frozen lakes, and wide Himalayan views, it perfectly blends beauty and adventure. Standing tall at around 12,500 feet, the Kedarkantha peak offers a stunning 360-degree view of mountains like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Ranglana, and the Yamunotri range. The total trek distance is about 20 kilometers, divided into three stretches Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (4 km), Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (4 km), and Base Camp to Summit and back to Juda Ka Talab (12 km).
Last December, I decided to do this trek and it turned into one of the best experiences of my life. What made it even more special was that I wasn’t alone I started this journey from Delhi with my two school friends, Aditya and Rohan. It had been years since we had gone on a trip together, and this trek brought back all our school memories, mixed with the thrill of a real mountain adventure.
From Delhi to Sankri - The Beginning of an Adventure
We took a bus from Delhi to Dehradun overnight, laughing and talking the whole way, barely getting any sleep. The next morning, the team from Himalayan Dream Treks picked us up from Dehradun. From there, we had a long but beautiful drive to Sankri village, the starting point of the Kedarkantha trek.
The road passed through pine forests, mountain rivers, and small villages. The cold breeze and mountain scent made us forget the tiredness of the journey. By evening, we reached Sankri, a peaceful little village surrounded by snow-covered peaks. The first thing that welcomed us was a cup of hot tea served by the team and it felt like heaven in that cold weather.
After a short briefing by our trek leader, we had dinner dal, rice, sabzi, and sweet halwa. The food tasted simple yet so comforting after the long travel. We slept early, wrapped in warm blankets, as the mountain air outside turned colder by the hour.
Day 1: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (4 km)
The next morning began with excitement. After a hearty breakfast of parathas, omelets, and hot chai, we packed our bags and started our 4 km trek from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab. The trail began with a gradual climb through dense pine and oak forests. The sunlight filtered through the trees, and soon, small patches of snow began to appear on the ground.
Aditya was the most excited among us he throwing snowballs at Rohan, who tried his best to dodge them. The sound of laughter echoed through the forest. The guides from the team kept us motivated and shared stories about local villages and legends.
After about 3 to 4 hours of walking, we reached Juda Ka Talab, a stunning frozen lake surrounded by tall pine trees. The surface of the lake was completely covered in ice, and the reflection of the sun on it made it look magical.
We set up camp near the lake. The team served us hot soup and lunch, which felt like the best meal in the world in that cold. In the evening, we gathered around a bonfire, chatting with other trekkers while sipping tea. Dinner that night pulao, curry, and chapatis was delicious. The cooks from Himalayan Dream Treks deserved all the praise; it’s not easy to make such good food in freezing weather, yet they managed it perfectly.
Later that night, when we stepped out of our tents, the sky was full of stars. It was so clear that we could even see the Milky Way faintly. We stood there quietly, realizing how small and peaceful the world felt in that moment.

Day 2: Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (4 km)
After a warm breakfast, we began our trek from Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp, about 4 km away. The trail climbed higher through thick forests, and soon we were walking through deep snow. Every step made a soft crunching sound under our boots.
The guides led us safely through the snow-covered path, helping everyone where it got slippery. The forest slowly opened into wide clearings, giving us breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks around. It was hard to believe how quiet and pure everything felt.
We reached the base camp by afternoon. The open view from there was incredible mountains on all sides and our small tents set against a backdrop of white. The team welcomed us with hot lunch rice, dal, vegetables, and pickle all freshly cooked and full of taste. The food kept us warm and energetic even in the freezing cold.
In the evening, our trek leader gathered everyone and explained the plan for the summit day. We were to start early around 3 AM to catch the sunrise from the top. After dinner, which included soup, maggi, and sweet kheer, we packed our bags and went to sleep early. The excitement made it hard to rest, but the sound of the wind outside slowly lulled us to sleep.

Day 3: Summit Day - Kedarkantha Base Camp to Peak and Back to Juda Ka Talab (12 km)
We woke up before dawn. It was freezing cold, but the excitement of reaching the summit pushed us out of our sleeping bags. After a quick tea and some biscuits, we started our climb under the stars. The snow glowed in the moonlight, and the silence of the mountains made the moment surreal.
The climb from base camp to the summit was steep and challenging in parts, but the guides encouraged everyone with calm voices and bright smiles. We took short breaks, sipping water and breathing in the thin air.
As the first light appeared in the sky, the colors changed from deep blue to shades of orange and pink. Finally, after hours of climbing, we reached the Kedarkantha Summit at 12,500 feet.
The view from the top left us speechless. The entire Himalayan range stood before us Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, Ranglana, and many more all glowing golden under the rising sun. Standing there with Aditya and Rohan, I felt pure happiness. We hugged, laughed, and took pictures, but also spent a few minutes just standing quietly, taking it all in.
After a while, we began our descent back to Juda Ka Talab, which made a total of 12 km for the day. When we reached the campsite, tired but smiling, the team welcomed us with hot pakoras and soup. That moment sitting in the snow, sipping soup, and laughing with friends was the best kind of mountain joy.
Dinner that night was amazing again rajma chawal, chapatis, and halwa. We ate with full hearts, knowing it was our last night in the mountains.

Day 4: Back to Sankri
The next morning, we began our final descent from Juda Ka Talab to Sankri. The trail looked even more beautiful in daylight, and we stopped often to take pictures and enjoy the fresh air. It was a quiet walk maybe because none of us wanted the journey to end.
Back at Sankri, the team had prepared a farewell meal hot rice, sabzi, roti, and tea. Everyone shared their favorite memories from the trek. For me, it wasn’t just reaching the summit it was the laughter with my friends, the warmth of food in freezing cold, and the kindness of the team that made this journey unforgettable.
My Thoughts on Kedarkantha Trek
The Kedarkantha Trek is perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers. It gives you everything you hope for in a winter trek snow, forests, frozen lakes, and breathtaking views. But what truly made this trip special for me was the team . They managed everything with care from safety and guidance to food and comfort.
The food deserves special praise hot parathas for breakfast, soup in the evening, maggi and kheer at high altitude everything was made with love and tasted incredible. It’s not easy to cook in such conditions, but they made sure every meal was warm and satisfying.
